Gmail through POP using Outlook

Gmail through POP using OutlookSince I thought more about Vidor’s question I decided that I would give a quick post about configuring Outlook for use with Gmail

First enable POP in Gmail:

  • Choose Settings from the top Gmail navigation bar.
  • Select the Forwarding and POP tab.
  • Make sure either Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on is selected.
    • Choose Enable POP for all mail if you want to download mail previously received at your Gmail account. Otherwise, select Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on.
  • Select the action you want applied to mail after you have downloaded it to your email client under When messages are accessed with POP.
  • Click Save Changes.

Next add Gmail to your Outlook:

  • Make sure POP access is turned on for your Gmail account.
  • Select Tools | E-mail Accounts… from the menu in Outlook.
  • Make sure Add a new e-mail account is selected.
  • Click Next >.
  • Choose POP3 as the Server Type.
  • Click Next >.
  • Enter your Gmail account details in the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) dialog:
    • Type your full name under Your Name:.
    • Type your Gmail email address under E-mail Address:.
    • Type your full Gmail address under User Name: as well.
    • Type your Gmail password under Password:.
    • Type pop.gmail.com under Incoming mail server (POP3):.
    • Type smtp.gmail.com under Outgoing mail server (SMTP):.
  • Click More Settings….
  • Go to the Outgoing Server tab.
  • Make sure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.
  • Leave Use same settings as my incoming mail server selected.
  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Make sure This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) is checked under both Incoming server (POP3): and Outgoing server (SMTP):.
  • Type 465 under Outgoing server (SMTP):
    • If the number under Incoming server (POP3): has not been changed to 995 automatically, enter 995 there.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Next >.
  • Click Finish.

  5. Chien, please tell me what I can do to help you out. If you are looking for Microsoft Outlook Express, it comes installed with Windows:
You can access this usually through the START menu, PROGRAMS, Outlook Express; or
You can go to the RUN menu (Windows key + letter “R”), type “msimn.exe” and then click on OK.
If you want more detailed instructions on finding Outlook Express, let me know.
If you have Microsoft Office, Outlook is available with most editions of Microsoft Office. If you are unsure if your version of Micorosft Office has Micosoft Outlook, let me know and I will give you information about checking your Microsoft Outlook version.
